Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re new to counselling it’s natural to be curious…
Can I talk to you before committing to counselling?
Of course! Give me a ring or drop me an email and we can have an informal chat before you decide. I also offer a half an hour introductory session to help you decide whether or not you want to start the counselling journey.
How long does a session last?
That’s an easy question – every session is 50mins long. They should take place at the same time every week but I know that sometimes this isn’t always possible and will try to be flexible if necessary.
How many sessions will I need?
That’s not such an easy question. I can’t say how many sessions you will need but you can engage for as long as you want. I don’t offer time limited therapy because every client is different. Some people may come for three months others for three years. It is standard counselling practice to advise clients to attend for 8 to 10 weeks before making a decision to stop as it can take time to begin to build the relationship and for you to feel able to truly freely and for changes and understandings to occur.
How much will it cost?
Do get in touch to discuss fees. Sessions are payable in advance and I can offer a small discount if you wish to pre-book a block of 10 sessions.
How do I book an appointment?
Let me know by email or by phone your availability and where you would like to meet and I will get back to you – I aim to be in touch within 36hours (excluding weekends).
What does a "creative approach" to therapy mean?
This means that we may decide to use resources such as clay, sand and other art materials in the session to help you explore the themes that arise.
Are the sessions really confidential?
Yes! Confidentiality is really important and is one of the key fundamentals of ethical counselling. Whatever you say to me is kept between us. I will only ever share information if I think you or someone else is at risk of harm – in those instances I have a legal requirement. The only other situation would be if a Court Judge orders me to do so but that’s never happened to me yet.
What happens if I can't make a session?
We all know that things happen to change the best laid plans. Please give me as much notice as possible and certainly more than 48hrs. Should you cancel a session you have booked then then the full fee is payable, unless the session can be reallocated to another client, in which case no fee is payable.
If I miss a session for any reason then no fees will be made and simiarly I will always aim to give you plenty of notice.
How do I pay?
Session fees can be paid by bank transfer or cash.
